Cesare Prandelli demands high standards of behaviour, so recent violent offences for their clubs keep Mario Balotelli and Daniele de Rossi out of the Italy squad for this match.
The coach is determined to break with the past and with his predecessor, Marcello Lippi. Older players like Antonio di Natale and Marco di Vaio are left on the sidelines, despite good form, and it appears Prandelli still wants to build a team around Antonio Cassano.
Matjaz Kek, Slovenia's coach, relies on tried and tested players, many of who will be familiar to this weekend's opponents - eight of his squad play club football across the border in Italy.
Italy are W9-D3-L0 on the road since losing a Euro qualifier to France more than four years ago. They have kept fewer clean sheets than their stereotype suggests - five in the 12 games - and five times the winning margin has been 2-1.
Slovenia went unbeaten at home through World Cup 2010 qualifying, conceding only once in six games. They have been less solid since then, losing 1-0 to Northern Ireland and beating the Faroe Islands 5-1.
taly are attractively priced, but with few strong patterns to guide us, the 2-1 Correct Score is the most appealing bet.
