Right gentlemen just as a side thread to what at the moment has been a really good Ascot we hear news of a 9 day ban for Dettori... Now where do we stand on this...
Harsh or Fair...
I say this, when watching there was no way that i would have said he was excessive with his whip. It was a race of two horses slugging it out against each other in a battle over the winning line. Just superb, compelling viewing. It was a sporting battle, we got excited by it. We urged both horses on whichever side you were on...( So You Think in my case...) It was pure sporting drama...
So i did a little arithmatic to show you what it was Frankie has been done for...
He hit/whipped his mount 24 times in the last 2 furlongs...
That equates to 24 times in 440 yards...
Or...
One strike every 18ish yards...
Now that to me seems very, very excessive. It would also equate to an average of one hit every two strides...!!!
So what do we think in the end...
1) Is the ban right...
2) Should the result stay as is...
3) Is this damaging to the whole sport in general. I didnt see him over use the whip, i didnt think he had when i heard the news...
4) Should we even use the whip. Or for steering only...
5) Do we really care or is this just a bit of a storm in a tea cup...
6) Were we upset that Ryan Moore didnt over use his whip on his mount, after all it worked for Frankie...
To start it off i personally think that the ban is fair... I think the whip should stay, and for whipping the horse if need be... Is it damaging to the sport. Well i put this to you all... I do prefer the jumps to the flat and ive seen some jockeys flogging horses around glue pots, Newcastle, Hexham for example where the horse is at walking pace. That really infuriates me no end. The jockeys know when a horse cant give any more, whipping it only adds to my displeasure...
But we were told today that the ground was PERFECT... No excuses if you dont run well...!!! So did Frankie run a great race with Rewilding, as we were told So You Think cant be beat... The conditions do dictate to what a jockey can or should do to me... What i saw today didnt seem excessive but the veiwing figures for the BBC, ATR, RacingUk and all the other tv channels showing it world wide didnt say anything after the race. Just commenting on what a truly great bit of sporting history we had the pleasure of watching... An i agreed... And i would think the millions of viewers would have felt the same...
But mark my words if there are less than 10,000 punters watching a glue pot race at Newcastle etc on a wed afternoon on say ATR it dosnt have the same impact...
Maybe im a bit deflated that one of the best races ive seen in a while has left a bitter taste at the end of it...
I would be glad for any comments...
ps - It wasnt because i lost my dough on it either... a £5 win treble @ 12/1 wasnt going to get me to retirement any quicker... Was it deeman...!!!
